Inspecting the damage

The first step in any repair process to inspect the damage. You can do it yourself or even take your car to a professional if necessary. Once done, the first step is to clean the chip and the area around it as best as possible with glass cleaner. Wipe dry with a clean towel afterwards. If there is any debris on the chip, a safety pin or similar item can be used to remove it.

When the area is clean, the stabilizer or base shall be affixed to the windshield, usually with an adhesive. Make sure it is carefully positioned and that the seal between it and the glass is tight. The next step usually involves placing the applicator nozzle or the stabilizer. Generally, the air is extracted from between the stabilizer and the windscreen, while injecting the resin. The vacuum thus created helps to draw the resin into the crack and to protect it from pollutants in the air.

Once the resin has cured for the time specified in the instructions, applicator and the stabilizer are removed. The next step usually involves placing a drop of resin on the repair and then placing the cured film thereof. When making the film, make sure to remove any air bubbles that may be present. Again, the curing of the resin in the amount of time specified in the instructions.

Once the film is removed, if any part of the repair is not uniform, usually can be solved with a razor blade. Any excess resin or adhesive residue can be cleaned with glass cleaner. If completed correctly, the repair should be kept fairly quiet at this point.

Virtue?s Top Social Brands of 2009: iPhone #1

Earlier this week, marketing firm Virtue released its annual list of the top 100 most social brands, where Apple and its many products reigned supreme for the second year in a row. Despite holding less than a quarter of market share in the computing world, Apple has managed to make itself well-known – and very desirable – in many other ways.

Using a unique sentiment-analysis algorithm developed in-house, Virtue narrowed down these brands by determining their popularity across major social media platforms and social interactivity. Beyond just determining who or what was most popular, the Virtue team was able to monitor online conversations across different mediums and dig deep to see what made people talk, and what makes consumers excited about a brand.

A news release from Virtue said, “Marketers are adding social as a foundation into the marketing mix and need the infrastructure to manage their increasingly robust presences. TV spots are now tagged out with Facebook URLs instead of corporate web sites and point-of-sale call to actions now direct you to fan them on Facebook or follow them on Twitter.” The list includes many brands you’d expect to see – Coca Cola, Microsoft, Amazon – as well as some surprises, such as General Motors. All together, the list is made up of just a few key industries, ranging from the expected (technology) to the unexpected (food). The following is a quick breakdown of the industries that stand out the most on this extensive list.

Luxury

Top luxury brands were well represented, with Gucci as the top luxury brand — ranking 27. Gucci has more than half a million fans on Facebook — the largest of any of the other brands on the list. For luxury brands, social media can be hard to balance, because opening it up to the masses lessens its exclusivity. However, Gucci seems to have found the balance. Also making the list were Louis Vuitton at 81, Prada at 88, and Burberry in the number 94 spot. Their place on this list alone showcases the resilience of the industry, especially among these top brands, who are getting people excited and talking about their product. Though it may be harder for people to buy from these brands,it’s clear that they’re connecting with customers – and potential customers – on an entirely new level.

Technology

It’s hard not to miss all of the tech companies and products dominating Virtue’s list. With the iPhone in the top spot, iTunes in 6th place, Apple itself at number 8, it’s clear that the tech innovator knows how to generate buzz. Other big tech brands include Microsoft (18), Verizon (48), Hewlett-Packard (51), Sprint (69), Phillips (84) and Panasonic (89). Interestingly, Google is absent from the list. Virtue reasons: “While Google, Facebook and others are top brands, The Vitrue 100 is measuring companies that are using social technology, not those who are the technology.”

Media

“Media brands make up 8 percent of the list – CNN #3, MTV #4, ESPN #23, CBS #32, ABC #33, Turner #36, Fox News #56, NBC #68 – perhaps illustrating our socialization of their content,” writes Virtue. In September 2009, Sparxoo’s Digital Influencers in News and Politics Report contained many of the same networks. If these are any indication, we can only expect more news and media outlets to develop effective online strategies, and target and engage digital audiences.

Auto

Though it’s no secret that the automotive industry has been struggling, many top brands are still able to get customers buzzing, as evidenced by this list. In the top 25 alone, Mercedes (17), BMW (20), Ford (24) and Honda (25) all make the cut, with Ferrari (26), Nissan (37), Toyota (38), Kia (53), and more following behind – 16 major auto brands in all. Ford has embraced social media through Twitter and YouTube, sharing customer stories and has launched entire campaigns specifically for social media, while Mercedes-Benz has developed their own crowdsourcing social media site for Mercedes owners to connect with each other and share ideas with the carmaker itself. Marketers and advertisers for this industry have definitely found something that works.

Food

Restaurants Subway (50), McDonald’s (62), Krystal (63), and KFC (66) all made the list, while grocery brands like Pringles (86), Nutella (42), Skittles (65), Pepsi (73), and Red Bull (47) helped make the food industry stand out. Some of these brands may not be much of surprise – Skittles…

Building Business in a Recession

People behave in contradictory ways during times of stress-like during a recession. Too many companies become paralyzed by indecision. Recessions are part of business cycles, just like growth periods. Thus, managing during a recession is part of the job – perhaps the most important part. But what should be done differently? The answer is “a lot,” but not “everything.” If you have managed through recessions before, you may remember what to do, assuming you did the right things. Fear of the unknown was natural.

How bad will it get? How long with it last? What should we do?

Consider my story about McRobert Springs:

I realized that some of our large competitors were struggling to remain profitable on the low volume orders and were cutting back on marketing and sales. The strategy I put in place was to build relationships with the buyers at each of the major manufacturers of Class 8 trucks. I traveled all over North America and pitched them on our expertise using a glossy brochure (its amazing what some great lighting and a good photographer can do with an ancient manufacturing plant) and our quality record. I asked them for an opportunity to bid on their short run, hard to make springs. Our cost structure let us make huge profits and still undercut the competition. As the economy started to expand again, those short runs got larger and we replaced some of our big competitors, who failed. Within a short period of time, we were running three shifts and competing on delivery and quality. Our new clients included Mack, Freightliner, Volvo, WesternStar, Kenworth, Peterbuilt, Fruehauf, Trailmobile and Midas.

The lessons learned in those days are very applicable today. No matter what business you are in you should be:

Maintaining or increasing your market awareness activities

let everyone know how good you are and that you keen to help

Approaching the largest players in your market

start building a relationship with them while their current suppliers are suffering Identify entry points

Looking for paradigm shifts in your market.

These can be driven by technology, demographics and other global factors. The automotive industry is in the midst of huge change as it shifts from a fossil fuel based production orientation to a renewable, energy based service industry. The cost of health care will hit a wall very soon – what will happen – how can you participate? Computing power and resources will shift into the ‘cloud’ – how should you position yourself?

Getting through a recession is like getting in shape after gaining weight. Exercise – make the right moves. Eat properly – “feast on competitors” – by selling the best products, to the best customers. And don’t quit when the going gets hard. Running a business is supposed to be hard; if it weren’t, everybody would be doing it. Now get out there and don’t just survive, attack and dominate! It’s a lot more fun than the alternative. These fears are normal when facing unpleasant events of unknown severity and duration.

The biggest mistake you can make is to act too slowly, but it’s also important to act with carefully considered intent. The second biggest mistake is denial: “This can’t be happening; it can’t get any worse.” Yes, it is, it can and it probably will. The third biggest mistake is to become defensive and reactive. When that happens, you will always be a step behind the competition-and a step late in meeting your customers’ needs. The secret is to take the right steps to break new ground and dominate the competition – and when the economy recovers, not only will you have survived, you’ll have stronger revenues and a much larger share of the market.
